HOUSTON – Amid rising land prices, Houston’s inner-city markets are now teeming with townhomes. These three- or four-story homes, attached and detached, maximize space on smaller lots inside the city.
Aman Khan has specialized in building townhomes; he shared three design trends he has noticed in Houston’s urban townhomes.
- Front-loading driveways: Many homebuilders use common driveways in their townhome communities. While these shared driveways maximize space, they don’t offer much room for guests to park.
- First-floor living: Most townhomes feature a garage and perhaps a guest bedroom on the first floor; living, kitchen and dining space on the second floor; and bedrooms and game rooms on the upper floors.
- Small backyards: Many townhomes feature rooftop terraces and balconies in lieu of yard space.
However, many families living in townhomes want small yards for their pets and young children, Khan said.
