HOUSTON – Local building permits for June were up from a year ago, but the total number for the first half of 2016 was down from the first half of 2015.

According to data from the city's Public Works & Engineering and Planning & Development Services departments, the number of building permits issued last month was up almost 13 percent over June 2015.

However, permits for the first six months of the year were down 10 percent from the same period last year.

Last month's permits were for projects totaling $811.2 million, a record for the month and up almost $100 million from the $720 million in permits a year earlier, according to The Greater Houston Partnership.

Year to date, city building permits totaled $3.5 billion, a 10 percent increase over the $3.9 billion total during the same period in 2015.

The value of nonresidential building permits rose 6 percent, and residential permit values increased 27 percent. Schools and other education buildings accounted for the largest share of permit values in June followed by permits for single-family homes.
