HOUSTON – In recent years Houston led the nation in relocation activity, according to reports from the Texas Association of Realtors and moving companies like U-Haul.

However, relocation activity has slowed amid the oil slump, said Amy Bernstein, founder and president of Bernstein Realty.

Although energy companies have laid off thousands of employees and halted new hiring during the downturn, Bernstein said she is seeing many ex-pats in the oil and gas industry returning to Houston from countries like the Canada, Holland, Nigeria, and the U.K.

Repatriating Americans working abroad saves energy companies a lot of money—and is keeping Bernstein’s relocation business running, she said.

Many of these buyers are looking for homes up to $600,000 and are looking for “clean lines” in their home designs, such as bright open floor plans and white cabinets, Bernstein added.
