SAN ANTONIO – City-owned utility company CPS Energy plans to buy and renovate the old AT&T building in downtown San Antonio to be its new headquarters.

With its existing headquarters off Navarro St. and other offices already at full capacity, CPS Energy Board Chairman Ed Kelley said he was pleased to move forward with the project.

Located along the River Walk off McCullough Ave. and Ave. B, the multi-story AT&T building has been empty for years but has tens of thousands of sf of office space and hundreds of parking spaces.

Kelley said the property meets the utility’s criteria such as proximity to public transportation, economic development impact, environmental factors and infrastructure.

Bexar County Appraisal District records show that the building was appraised at $30.3 million in 2016.

The new headquarters is scheduled to be completed in 2019.
