SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is nearing a critical milestone in the development of its 266,000-sf School of Osteopathic Medicine at Brooks City Base.

UIW President Lou Agnese expects the $35 million project will have a transformative impact on south San Antonio, ultimately leading to the creation of the city’s second major medical center.

"The first phase will be completed by the end of this month," Agnese said.

The initial phase of the medical school project will include the renovation of about 130,000 sf of space in existing Brooks City Base infrastructure previously used by the U.S. Air Force.

The second phase, which will include the renovation of more than 130,000 additional sf of existing Brooks space should be completed by next summer.

Agnese says, "This school is going to help create a second medical center for San Antonio."

Once completed, UIW plans to welcome its first class of 150 medical students in August 2017.
