HOUSTON - The energy downturn has crimped the market in some of Houston's most active areas for homebuilding.

Builders started fewer houses in 2015 than they did in 2014 in a majority of the top 25 communities ranked by housing starts, according to housing consulting firm Metrostudy.

Though demand has slowed along with Houston's job growth, generally there's not a glut of new housing on the market.

The inventory of new homes in every submarket tracked by Metrostudy but one, Far North, is well below the six months that would be considered a balanced market. Far North stands at 8.5 months.
