In the bag: Grocer expansions aim to fill carts online and in the aisle
TEXAS – Astonishing population growth has incited an all out ‘grocery war’ in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas where hungry consumer are gobbling up new supermarket produce.
As grocery retailers expand around the region faster than a cornstalk in summer, grocery-anchored centers are becoming the most prolific development type in the TX-OK-AR construction pipeline.
In fact, CBRE Research identified approximately 70 grocery-anchored developments either in the queue or under construction in DFW alone, dominated by Kroger.
Not to be outdone, 35 percent of current retail construction in Houston is also grocery related. Even in smaller markets such as San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Northwest Arkansas, grocer activity is especially strong in the discount category.
E-Commerce supply chains are improving as savvy retailers capture this virtual vertical construction pipeline. Major grocers are increasing efforts to evolve with smartphone apps, online shopping and multi-story grocery stores.
