WACO COUNTRY - For a growing number of people, particularly those with a taste for wine, spring means a good opportunity to visit a Texas vineyard and sample some vintages, adding reds and whites to a season known for bluebonnet blues.

Doing so once meant a day trip to a winery like Messina Hof in Bryan, but the last decade or so has seen several wineries and vineyards planted in Waco’s backyard, so to speak, within a half-hour’s drive.

There’s more going on than just growing grapes. Local wineries often host tastings, wine dinners, parties or live jazz or acoustic music on a regular basis.

“It’s an event—people come out for something that’s educational and relaxing,” said Gary McKibben, owner of the award-winning Red Caboose Winery in Meridian.
