THE COLONY - Scheels, a Fargo, N.D.-based chain of 27 sporting goods superstores in 12 states, is coming to Texas.

The store will be 300,000 sf, or about 12 times the size of a traditional sporting goods big box stores such as Dick’s and Academy.

Nebraska Furniture Mart’s 400-acre Grandscape development has so far announced restaurants and hotels, but another big destination store had not been named until today.

The store won’t open until 2020, but the announcement is a big catch for the $1.5 billion Grandscape development on Hwy. 121 in The Colony with so many competing projects in the works nearby including the Dallas Cowboys Star project in Frisco and Legacy West under construction around the site of the new Toyota headquarters in Plano.

CEO Steve M. Scheel said the company has been scoping out Texas for ten years. The store will be its biggest Scheels, he said. Construction will begin in 2018.
