HOUSTON - Houston high schools had a strong showing on U.S. News and World Report's 2016 Best High Schools Rankings.

The Bayou City was home to seven of the top 100 best rated schools in the country, with one scoring a top 10 spot. All seven of the schools earned gold medal rankings, representing the highest college readiness scores in the U.S.

Carnegie Vanguard High School was the top rated high school in Houston, coming in at No. 10 nationally. The school, located in the Fourth Ward within the Houston Independent School District, dropped several places from last year when it earned a No. 6 spot.

However, the top 10 showing is still a significant improvement over its No. 23 spot in 2014.

Here's how Houston schools ranked nationally (within the top 100):
•    10. Carnegie Vanguard High School
•    29. DeBakey High School for Health Professions
•    35. YES Prep - Southwest
•    50. Eastwood Academy
•    65. YES Prep - North Central
•    78. Challenge Early College High School
•    87. YES Prep - East End
