SAN ANTONIO - Home sales continued to surge in the San Antonio area in March 2016 while prices also rose, building on a long-term trend.

More than 2,500 homes were sold in the San Antonio area last month, a 14 percent increase from the year before, according to data from the San Antonio Board of Realtors.

The growing local population and improving economy have been pushing sales up. Unlike other parts of Texas, the local market hasn't been walloped by the slump in the oil industry.

The median sales price of a home in the area increased 6 percent to $198,700 in March from $186,800 during that month last year.

A record high of 27,154 homes were sold in the San Antonio area last year. The median home price broke $200,000 for the first time in May 2015, peaking at $202,500.
