HOUSTON - Houston Community College broke ground on a $40 million campus in North Forest after more than a year of delay, the Houston Chronicle reports.

HCC plans to renovate 25,615 sf of the campus' existing buildings, while also adding a new central utility plant and a 20,691-sf academic building with classrooms, science labs and student amenities.

The college will focus on early-college high school programs and automotive technology.

North Forest originally spent $8.1 million to buy the 43 acres for the campus. However, HCC does not plan to use all of the land and is working on selling one plot at MacGregor Way and Hwy. 288.

The money will go toward the North Forest development.

Meanwhile, HCC is moving forward on several other projects within its Groundbreaker Bond Program.

Last month, HCC recently broke ground on $26 million upgrades to the Northline Campus in north Houston.

The campus will have a 204,896-sf classroom building, central plant and parking garage on an existing campus on about 21.3 acres.

The facility will include labs, art studio, a fitness training center and student lounge.

Projected completion date is June 2017.
