CUERO, DEWITT COUNTY - A new medical helicopter service will soon start work on its building behind Cuero Community Hospital.

Air Evac Lifeteam’s new center will feature a helicopter hangar for the Bell 206 Long Ranger Helicopter and a modular building that will serve as the crew's quarters.

"This transport is indicated for severely ill or unstable patients," said Judy Krupala, chief nursing officer and interim CEO for Cuero Community Hospital.

The helicopter service's 70-mile operating radius will cover calls between San Antonio and El Campo and between Bastrop and Fulton.

The center will cost up to $300,000 to build, and four rotating crews of three members will staff the helicopter 24 hours a day.

The company is renting the one-acre plot from Cuero Community Hospital at a cost of $750 a month, and Air Evac is paying for the infrastructure.
