Houston huddles up for $12.5M Super Bowl LI road plan
HOUSTON – Roads surrounding Houston’s NRG Park are slated to receive major upgrades leading up to the 2017 Super Bowl.
Harris County commissioners approved more than $550,000 in contracts that will be used to determine what improvements need to be made on four roads surrounding the stadium, the Houston Chronicle reports.
The construction itself is slated to cost $12.5 million. The Chronicle reports that contracts included:
• $212,000 to IDS Engineering Group Inc. for Ardmore St.
• $176,000 to Cobb Fendley & Associates Inc. for Holly Hall St.
• $164,000 to Brown & Gay Engineers Inc. for Knight Rd.
• $32,000 to Costello Inc. for El Rio St.
Precinct one Commissioner Gene Locke is overseeing the project, which is funded by the $132 million the precinct is allotted to spend on road construction and maintenance this fiscal year.
A number of new developments, projects and improvements to the city are underway in different areas of town in preparation for next year’s Super Bowl.
Downtown Houston has kicked off a frenzy of construction that is expected to be complete before the big game, including $175 million in upgrades to the convention district.
The area has also seen new hotels sprout up to accommodate the influx of tourists. Several historic downtown buildings have been transformed, while the brand new Marriott Marquis is also underway.
Meanwhile, Montrose is also slated to get $4 million in funds for new signage, median designs and bridge lighting.
