DALLAS-FORT WORTH - North Texas-based Southwest and American airlines posted gains in total passenger traffic in February compared to a year ago, the companies reported.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines saw record passenger traffic and capacity numbers for February, but its planes were less full compared with the previous year.

Passenger traffic grew by 4.7 percent, while capacity jumped 8 percent.

That means American’s February load factor—how full the planes fly—fell to 77 percent last month from 79.3 in February 2015. Load factors for domestic and international flights fell, as did mainline and regional operations.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines saw its total passenger traffic increase 13.5 percent on 14.7 percent capacity growth compared with a year ago, figures show.

Southwest’s jump in capacity also led to a lower load factor—79 percent this February compared to 79.9 percent last year.
