McALLEN - The Texas Department of Transportation plans to spend $34 million—and three years—overhauling Expressway 83 between McColl Rd. and Ware Rd.

Contractors will replace the Bicentennial Blvd. overpass, placing the street beneath Expressway 83, and lift the 23rd St. and 10th St. overpasses a little higher, which will allow more commercial traffic to pass underneath.

The Department of Transportation closed the T-shaped Bicentennial exit after several fatal wrecks. Along with making the exit safer, the project will improve traffic flow.

The preliminary work is set to start on March 21, and construction is scheduled to begin in October.
