Houston beats Austin, Dallas for women in technology jobs
HOUSTON – Houston ranks above its fellow Texas cities Austin, Dallas and San Antonio for women in technology jobs, according to a recent report from SmartAsset.
The Bayou City ranked No. 22 out of 58 U.S. cities. The study took into account the percent of women in the local technology industry, gender pay gap in technology, income after housing costs and the three-year employment growth for tech.
Dallas came in at No. 25, San Antonio came in at No. 51 and Austin ranked No. 55. The top Texas city was Plano, which ranked No. 17.
Women in Houston’s tech scene earn 88.6 percent compared to men in the same position, compared to a national average of 86.7 percent. Women make up 25.2 percent of the tech workforce in town, compared to 26.5 percent nationally.
In addition, Houston has a 6 percent growth rate for its tech sector, compared to an 8 percent national average, the study showed.
Local industry leaders have been saying for years that more needs to be done to include women in technology and that it could play a significant role in closing the workforce demand gap for Houston’s tech companies.
