LUBBOCK - A ceremonial groundbreaking marked the ongoing construction of an 80,000-sf, three-story Texas Tech University System office building near the corner of Texas Tech Pkwy. and the Marsha Sharp Fwy.

Chancellor Robert Duncan said the Tech System is only about 20 years old.

Since 1996, Duncan said, the Tech System has expanded across the state, with campuses in Dallas, Waco, Junction, Highland Lakes, Fredericksburg, San Angelo, Odessa, Midland, Abilene, Lubbock, Amarillo and El Paso.

The new office space will include core Tech System functions such as facilities, planning and construction; institutional advancement; financial services; audit services; general counsel; government relations; academic affairs and communications and marketing.

Michael Molina, Vice Chancellor of Facilities Planning and Construction, said 215 people in those offices will be integrated into one facility.

Tech system Board of Regents approved the new building in May 2014.

The project is scheduled for completion in March 2017.
