HOUSTON – The Houston Golf Association has taken over the Gus Wortham Park Golf Course from the City of Houston.

The golf association raised $5 million to take over the course, as part of a contract with the city.

The group is now working to raise the remaining $10 million to build a new clubhouse and new facilities to be ready by 2019.

The course restoration is slated to be completed by December 2017.

The golf course, along Brays Bayou east of downtown, has been an attraction in Houston since the early 1900s, when it was the Houston Country Club. Crews will break ground on the new construction later this year.

In 2014, City Council voted to restore the golf course rather than convert the 150-acre site to a garden.
