Lamar State (LSC-PA): 40K-SF Seahawk Landing housing
PORT ARTHUR – With multiple housing proposals floating about for Port Arthur’s downtown, Lamar State College-Port Arthur (LSC-PA) officialsannounced plans for a multi-million dollar residence hall to be built on campus.
The 40,000-sf complex, dubbed Seahawk Landing, is projected to cost $6.6 million and will house up to 101 students in 36 units, said Gerry Dickert, public information coordinator for LSC-PA.
Construction is expected to be completed as early as this fall. Port Arthur-based Itex Group will build the complex on Lakeshore Dr., near the school’s music hall.
Itex will build, own and manage the residence hall until the expiration of a 30-year lease, when Seahawk Landing will become the property of the college.
The complex will include options of two bedroom, one bath and four bedroom, two bath. Each unit will be fully furnished and will include a kitchen and living room.
The model of the dorms is more like off-campus student apartments than traditional dorms.
LSC-PA expects to draw residents from the athletics programs, as well as students commuting from Louisiana and Hardin, Chambers and Liberty counties.
The Port Arthur Economic Development Corporation put up a $1 million grant for the project and is giving a $1 million loan to Itex for construction of the complex.
Additionally, Port Arthur is giving Itex a $17,700 tax abatement for ten years and Jefferson County commissioners agreed to a 100 percent tax abatement of $3.9 million for five years.
