HOUSTON - A previously shuttered post office in the Heights will be transformed into a retro-style mixed-use project next year.

The U.S. Postal Service building at 1050 Yale Street, at the corner of 11th, was purchased by MFT Interests in January. The company plans to tear down the 1970's post office and replace it with two two-story buildings.

Dubbed Heights Central Station, the project is slated to include ground-level retailers, such as fitness studios, restaurants and shops. The developers are hoping to attract professionals to the upstairs office spaces.

MFT Interests said that the development will fit with the Height's historic style. Construction is slated to begin later this year, with the first phases of construction completed in mid-2017.

Last year, one of Houston's largest post offices was also announced to be transformed into a mixed-use development.
