UNION GROVE, UPSHUR COUNTY - Union Grove ISD has broken ground on a $9.9 million competition gym and auditorium and the beginning of the final phase of a bond program that began eight years ago.
District taxpayers voted in May 2015 to approve a bond measure to build the facility, which will be about 50,000 sf.
The new building will be next to the high school on part of the space that is used for practice fields.
Superintendent Brian Gray said it is expected to take 12 to 14 months for the facility to be in use.
The competition gym and auditorium will share a space.
When visitors enter the facility, the gym will be to the left while the auditorium will be to the right.
The gym will feature seat-backs and have dressing facilities for the home team and visitors.
The auditorium will have 800 to 900 seats and will feature audio and video equipment.
Berry and Clay Construction of Rusk is building the facility, which was designed by Jeff Potter Architects of Longview.
