EDINBURG - City officials committed $30 million for the construction of Hidalgo County’s new courthouse during a joint meeting with county commissioners.

The contribution will account for “no more than 20 percent” of the total cost —which is estimated to be about $150 million—according to a memorandum of understanding draft.

The new 311,000-sf facility will be built on the existing courthouse square.

It is expected to house 24 courtrooms, the 13th Court of appeals, offices for the district attorney, county clerk, public defender, indigent defense, adult probation and a holding area for the sheriff’s department, according to a news release from the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation.

If both parties agree on the MOU and keep meeting deadlines for the project, construction could begin before the end of the year and culminate with a move-in date of October 1, 2018.
