KATY - Construction is slated to begin on Katy Independent School District's second football stadium on February 5.

The stadium, located at 1733 Fort Bend Rd. beside the existing Rhodes Stadium, is scheduled to be open for the regular 2017 football season and is expected to cost around $57 million.

It will include 2,200 more seats than the current Rhodes stadium and will also feature a multipurpose space for the athletic department. Rhodes Stadium will continue to operate.

Construction was previously slated to begin in October after already being pushed back after heavy rains in May.

The project is being funded by a $748 million bond approved by voters in 2014.

The 2014 bond is also going toward building six new schools, renovating six campuses and upgrading technology in the district.
