AUSTIN – Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush is calling on volunteers in the Rio Grande Valley for the 20th Annual Winter Beach Cleanup Friday, Feb. 12, at South Padre Island.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Adopt-A-Beach will provide all necessary materials.

The Winter Beach Cleanup is one of three all-volunteer seasonal cleanups coordinated through the Adopt-A-Beach program of the Texas General Land Office.

Since 1986, Adopt-A-Beach volunteers have picked up 9,200 tons of trash, which is the equivalent to the weight of 44 blue whales, making it one of the most successful volunteer programs in the nation.

Check-in is at Edwin Atwood Park, Access Road 5, off of SH 100 at 27159 State Park Rd. 100 on South Padre Island.
