HOUSTON – A new office building and parking garage will go up soon at Rice University.

Located near the intersections of Main and Cambridge St., the new six-story building will be home to up to 295 work spaces and feature large terracotta fins on the exterior walls to control the amount of natural light into the offices.

The east side of the 66,710-sf building will be attached to a seven-level garage with 496 parking spaces.

The buildings will overtake the current Lovett parking lot, but add 382 spaces to the campus, according to the university.

The office building is slated to open at the end of summer 2017, while the garage will open at the beginning of that summer.

The university has several other construction projects underway on the campus.

The school’s 50,000-sf Moody Center for the Arts, funded by a $20 million award from the Moody Foundation, is under construction on the south side of Rice’s campus near the current arts and media center.

Rice is also building another arts facility that aims to make the university’s opera program competitive with peer institutions such as the Juilliard School in New York.

The school also announced plans to build a new $2 million sports facility for its soccer, track and field, and cross country teams in July.
