HOUSTON – Now is the perfect time for the Bay Area Regional Medical Center's expansion, said Paul McCleary, vice president of business development at Medistar Corp.

Clear Lake's aging population coupled with its first residential development in decades have led the area to become one of Houston's hottest outer-loop communities. According to Houston Business Journal research, the area has the fifth-wealthiest ZIP code in the Houston region.

Under the Bay Area Regional Medical Center's expansion, which began this past summer, the number of emergency department beds doubled from 11 to 23, and an additional CT scanner was added to deal with the "overload" of need. Three new operating rooms will be functional this month, with two more operating rooms being added in fourth quarter 2016.

When all renovations are complete, the hospital will have added about 140,000 sf, making it 373,000 sf with 200 in-patient beds. When it opened last year, it had 232,000 sf with 104 beds.

One of the most significant upgrades is the center's fifth-floor women's center, which will wrap up around spring 2017. The center will include a labor and delivery postpartum recovery area and a neonatal ICU.

Washington, D.C.-based architecture firm Page designed the project, and Houston-based Linbeck Group LLP is the construction firm. Houston-based Black Mountain Construction Co. led the hospital's emergency department expansion, as well as the addition of the CT scanner and microbiology lab.
