DENTON - The largest economic development project has broken ground as a WinCo Foods distribution center and is currently under construction.

The 800,000-sf building at 300 S. Western Blvd. could be completed as early as December 2016, said Don Olsen, an architect on the project.

The project also includes a 60,000-sf truck maintenance center on the property and will have the ability in the future to expand an additional 130,000 sf, said Michael Read, vice president of public and legal affairs at WinCo Foods Inc.

WinCo, based in Boise, Idaho, bought the 77 acres in June, the same month the Denton City Council voted to approve incentives for the project — then known only by the code name "Project Ranger One."

At the new facility, WinCo will employ an estimated 165 people and bring in a management team from Nebraska, Read said.

Overall, the company is investing about $135 million in the project.
