IRVING - Texas Center for Proton Therapy has delivered proton beam radiation treatment to its first patients, opening three months ahead of its original schedule.

The 63,000-sf facility — located at 1501 West Royal Lane — is the only center in the state that offers the latest generation proton therapy technology, and has the capacity to treat more than 100 patients per day.

It is outfitted with the newest generation of equipment from Brussels-based manufacturer IBA, including a 220-ton cyclotron (a massive magnet-packed particle accelerator), and two isocentric gantry treatment rooms, each containing a 30-foot tall, 110-ton machine that rotates to increase accuracy in treating tumors.

It also has a fixed-beam treatment room and PET/CT imaging and MRI technology, as well as on-site laboratory services.

Texas Center for Proton Therapy will be the first stand-alone LEED-certified proton therapy center in the U.S.

Before it opened, Dallas-Fort Worth was the largest metropolitan area without a proton beam cancer treatment center, with the nearest at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Oklahoma City.
