SAN ANTONIO
– The Center for Health Care Services (CHCS) plans to convert a former homeless
shelter into a multistory medical campus.

The roughly
$50 million project, which will be financed with a mix of public and private
funding, is expected to provide much needed access to adult mental health care
services and help revitalize a long-neglected area immediately west of downtown
San Antonio.

The Center
for Health Care Services has gutted the three-story structure at Frio and West
Commerce streets that once housed the Grand Central Hotel and later
SAMMinistries.

The
nonprofit organization has saved the brick facade and will rebuild new medical,
office and retail space from the ground up inside the old shell.

The 122,000-sf
complex, expected to be completed by late 2017, will house adult mental health
services in an outpatient setting. CHCS plans to lease the second and third
floors as medical and professional office space.

The ground
floor will include about 12,000 sf of storefront retail space. The new campus will also include a multistory
parking garage.
