Katy’s entertainment industry gains momentum
KATY – The Katy area — which is usually defined by Katy ISD boundaries — has seen its population almost triple since the year 2000 to 309,556, according to the Katy Area Economic Development Council (EDC).
In 2011, surveys facilitated by the EDC showed that residents believed the area lacked enough amusement and recreation sites. The consensus was that the area needed more businesses focused on fun.
Katy has some longtime entertainment venues such as Katy Mills Mall, Time Square Entertainment and the Golf Club at Cinco Ranch.
But in recent years, more large-scale projects have arisen, with city officials welcoming the increased sales-tax revenue.
The greatest entertainment growth is yet to come:
• The city plans for a 55,000-sf convention center by Katy Mills Mall.
• Seven hotels are being constructed in the Katy area, and a new shopping center will pop up soon by Katy Fort Bend Rd. and I-10.
• Katy Mills Mall is undergoing a $25 million face-lift.
• Katy ISD’s $58 million second football stadium is beginning construction.
• The biggest entertainment-related project is Typhoon Texas, a 25-acre, $45 million water park.
