Ikea plans second ‘home sweet home’ in DFW
GRAND PRAIRIE – The Swedish company Ikea has submitted plans to the City of Grand Prairie to open a store in the fall of 2017.
The 293,000-sf store will be built north of I-20 on 32 acres along the east side of SH 161 and Mayfield Rd.
Ikea will be asking for economic development funds only for road, utility and other infrastructure work, said Ikea spokesman Joseph Roth, as it expects to be a large source of future local sales and property taxes.
Ikea opened its 310,000-sf Frisco store in 2005 and over the years has talked about a second location in the Dallas area. Grand Prairie will be Ikea’s fourth store in Texas.
The store will employ 300 people and the construction phase will require 500 workers, Ikea said.
The new Ikea will have 1,250 parking spaces and plans some on-site power generation to meet its U.S. renewable energy goals.
The store will display some of its 10,000 items in 50 room settings and three model home interiors and will have a restaurant with seating for 350. Family friendly features will include a supervised children’s play area, baby care rooms and preferred parking.
