LA FERIA - Our Lady of the Lake University's local branch is expanding its campus as it move its branch campus at a former La Feria elementary school into a $1.9 million city building by summer 2016.

Officials have broken ground at 1650 S. Main St. where the 11,500-sf building will offer ten classrooms, office space and a conference room when construction is completed in June, City Manager Sunny Philip said.

Director Patricia Longoria said the university, whose contract with the La Feria school district expires next August, will expand from the former Sam Houston Elementary School campus, which offers seven classrooms and two computer labs.

Next door to the new site, Longoria said, a 20,000-sf domed storm shelter under construction will serve as a student commons and event center.
