WHITEWRIGHT - Whitewright city officials won a $5.69 million grant to develop a new $8 million, 48-unit apartment community that will feature housing both at market rental rates and below-market rental rates to provide affordable housing.

The new complex, Abbington Commons, will feature one-bedroom to four-bedroom units with market rental rates ranging from $660 to $1,021 per month and below-market rental rates ranging from $256 to $400 per month, said Mayor Allen West.

The Whitewright Economic Development Corporation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture also provided funding for the apartment complex.

Teachers, entry-level emergency responders and retired individuals on pensions are among those who will be eligible for the affordable housing.

City officials expect construction on the project to begin in early 2016 and be completed as soon as November 2016.
