LUBBOCK - Falling unemployment and booming housing sales are helping the Lubbock economy.

The most recent index calculated by Lubbock National Bank was at 143.4.

This monthly index is up 3 percent from the March 2014 index of 139.2.

Chip Gilmour, Lubbock National Bank senior vice president, said the index is at its record high.

Home sales in March were up 42 percent compared to last year with a record 372 homes sold. March also had an increase in retail sales construction permits.

Unemployment was at 3.3 percent, a 17.5 decrease from March 2014. About 1,800 jobs were added to the Lubbock economy over the last year.

Dollars spent on retail sales was about $204.5 million, which is almost $2.8 million more than the same month last year.

Cotton prices are down about 31.1 percent compared to March 2014, which had prices at $84.90, about $26 more than the March 2015 price.
