Lockheed Martin loosens bolts on 87 jobs at Port San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO – Lockheed Martin Commercial Engine Solutions
plans to lay off 87 employees in San Antonio in November.
The company is a major tenant at the Port San Antonio
Industrial Complex, where it performs maintenance and repair work on aircraft
engines for commercial airlines and U.S. and international governments.
Some of the employees being laid off will be placed on
leaves of absence beforehand, according to a letter sent by Lockheed to the
Texas Workforce Commission.
The layoff announcement comes less than a week after Port
San Antonio CEO and President Roland Mower pledged to work with public
officials and tenants to bring 5,000 jobs to the port by 2020.
The
port has lost about 2,000 jobs in recent years, largely due to cutbacks at the
U.S. Defense Department and the difficulty of some aerospace tenants landing
commercial work orders. It currently has about 12,000 employees.
