SAN ANGELO - The first phase of construction for TLC Academy, a local kindergarten-through-high school charter school, is underway at 3301 TLC Way, just off Houston Harte Expy. in the former R.G. Barry Inc. building.

The first phase of the construction consists of converting part of the approximately 170,000 sf of building into the school’s gymnasium and church.

The school is currently seeking $5.117 million in a quality school construction bond for the project, according to Walt Landers, senior pastor of the church and CEO of the charter school.

The entire elementary, which currently has 630 students, is expected to move into the renovated building.

The renovations will create 37 regular classrooms, a science lab, library, two computer labs, a couple of music areas, special education department, a kitchen and a cafeteria.

The plan is to move the elementary and church operations into the R.G. Barry Building, and dedicate the Melrose location for the school’s junior high grades. The goal is to have the elementary and junior highs moved to their respected buildings at the start of the school year in August 2014.
