McALLEN - City Commissioners approved $412,000 for design changes to its $45 million performing arts center.

The additional money will go toward a less “vanilla” shade structure outside the center, lights that can be seen from the highway and “upper-end” carpeting at $27 a yard, said Greg Townsend, who specializes in strategic planning for the city manager’s office, at Monday’s workshop.

On April 27, 2015, city staff recommended putting funds aside to commission the creation of an art installation on the wall facing the center’s entrance. At Monday’s workshop, staff recommended asking residents to donate to fund the installation.

The city would need about $200,000 for the installation, city staff said.

The performing arts center was scheduled to open in summer 2016. That’s been pushed back to October due to the rain and design changes.
